This is a follow-up to my post on Domestic Terrorism.
I want to say at the outset even if it means some readers will disregard the rest of the post that I support the Second Amendment to the Constitution and the conservative interpretation of that Amendment. Here it is: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
It does not surprise me that many of our European friends do not get it. Most, if not all the European nations were at one time or the other ruled by not-so-benevolent rulers that maintained their power by force of arms. The context then of the Second Amendment was written in the wake of the American Revolution and that the “shot heard round the world” was fired because our British friends sought to confiscate the arms of the colonial militia in the Boston area.
The American Revolution had more than one cause but keep in mind it was more of Civil War than a Revolution since all considered themselves Englishmen. The British miscalculated when they tried to disarm what they considered to be a treasonous militia.
It seems that the Founders had a bit of wisdom we overlook and that is, governments can behave badly, even duly elected ones with smiley faces, and that government for the people and by the people is secured by a free people who take their responsible right to bear arms seriously. Emphasis on the word responsibly.
The progressives of course will have none of it and as in most matters treat the Constitution as if it were silly putty that can be formed and reformed to suit their political ends. In other words, a controlling progressive government is the very kind of government the people need protection from.
No doubt, that statement will offend any progressive who reads it since it casts dispersion upon the current administration and the intentions of the administration. So be it. I’ve long since given up trying to persuade people who are more interested in a “free” lunch than they are in being free and responsible.
And that leads me to another point which is actually my main point.
No amount of gun control or new regulations will ever deter determined evil. The very idea of evil is something most progressives dismiss out of hand since if they considered it they may have to consider the spiritual dimension of things, something they have a disdain for unless it serves their purposes just as “gun control” serves their agenda to disarm the peasantry.
Allow me to give a case in point. The Sandy Hook massacre was an atrocity, a horrible one and I cannot imagine the pain and suffering that town experienced but it was not the worst atrocity committed against children (and adults) in the US.
While reading some the commentary and comments regarding Sandy Hook I came across a reference to the Bath School Disaster something I was unfamiliar with.
I googled the phrase and found it was in reference to the worst mass murder of children in the USA.
Here is the wiki summary of what happened:
The Bath School disaster is the name given to a murder and three associated bombings by Andrew Kehoe in Bath Township, Michigan, on May 18, 1927, which killed 38 elementary school children, two teachers, and four other adults; at least 58 people were injured. Kehoe first killed his wife, set off two major explosions, and committed suicide with his last (and third) explosion. Most of the victims were children in the second to sixth grades (7–14 years of age[1]) attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest mass murder in a school in United States history.[2]
By all accounts Kehoe was an angry bitter man who insisted on getting his own way. He was opinionated and hard to work with. Kehoe’s mother died when he was very young and his step-mother who he argued with frequently died in a horrible burning accident that Kehoe contributed too. It was reported that he watched her burn for a few moments before he acted. It seems an oil burning stove set her on fire and Kehoe attempted to douse the fire with water, which simply made the oil spread over her body.
Whether his slow reaction was due to shock or cruelty it is hard to say. A slow reaction to the suffering of one that is hated is consistent with Kehoe’s temperament that became more obvious as time went on. His picture, taken in 1920, seven years before the bombing shows a rather arrogant expression.
The Kehoe’s were Roman Catholic but Andrew Kehoe refused to pay the church assessment and stopped attending the church. He also refused to let his wife attend. His cruelty extended to animals and it was reported he once beat a horse a death and shot a neighbor’s dog that was barking on his property.
Later in life he was treasurer of the Bath, Michigan School Board where he argued with all using his anger to intimidate others. He was not well liked and eventually lost re-election as a county clerk. Kehoe was a bully who was bent on getting his way and when he did not, there was hell to pay.
His wife had TB and at the time there was no cure or treatment-only frequent hospitalization.
The debts mounted and the bank moved to foreclose on the Kehoe property. It is believed that as these events played out Kehoe began to plan his murderous revenge.
The story behind how he planned and executed the three bombings that led to so many dead and injured is an article all by itself. I encourage the reader to follow the links below if they are interested in the details.
One thing is certain. Kehoe was no dummy and not deranged. His careful planning indicates that he rationally and logically thought out each step in plotting what was accurately described as murderous revenge. It illustrates that a man or woman bent on evil will not be deterred by any amount of laws for Kehoe used common, legal explosives that were used in his farming community. Only one rifle shot was fired and that was Kehoe firing it into the back of his truck when he determined to kill himself and all the bystanders he could who had gathered at the site of the first two explosions.
Kehoe ranked as America’s #1 domestic terrorist until Timothy McVeigh detonated a bomb truck in Oklahoma City killing 168 people including many children on April 19th, 1995.
The commonality with all terrorists, both domestic and foreign is hatred, anger, bitterness and a sense of revenge. Terrorists believe something. They believe they are getting even for past injustices. In their depraved minds they are somehow making things right. The emotion that drives them is hatred.

For a terrorist the categories of right and wrong are confused at best, ignored at worst. A determined terrorist will stop at nothing to get what they want and what they want is murderous revenge,
We can blame the explosives that Kehoe used or we can blame it on his mother dying and the poor relationship he had with the step-mother or we can blame the people who did not re-elect an angry man or we can blame the bank that foreclosed on Kehoe’s property. We can talk around the periphery of what is really wrong with people and never get the root issue and the root issue is sin and the evil it perpetrates.
