Stonewall Jackson’s Grandson was a Fighter Pilot in WW2

I was surprised to find this grave marker around General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson’s statue and grave marker in Lexington, VA.

Grave marker for Stonewall Jackson’s grandson killed in WW2.

The inscription is for Stonewall Jackson’s grandson, Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian (1915-1944)

This Jackson served in the Army Air Corp during WW2 and reached the rank of Colonel. He had quite the career which you can read about here.

Col. Jackson was part of the 361st Fighter Group and was killed August 12th, 1944 while piloting a P-51 Mustang near Arras, France. His body was never recovered.

Lou IV named for Col. Jackson’s daughter.

The picture features a number of P-51 fighters but the one on the foreground is Col. Jackson’s. The name on the plane is Lou IV, named for Jackson’s daughter whom he never met.

I had no idea.

  1. I think the last name of Stonewall Jackson’s grandson was “Christian”, rather than “Jackson.” This is actually suggested in the first part of the reference.
